Intern - Clean Heat Policy

Position Summary

The Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management (NESCAUM) seeks a full-time (35 hours/week) summer intern to provide technical, policy, research, and coordination support for NESCAUM’s Clean Heat Initiative.

Job Description

Headquartered in Boston, NESCAUM is the nonprofit association of state air quality agencies in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. NESCAUM provides scientific, technical, analytical, and policy support to these states and works directly with air and climate agencies on reducing emissions of criteria air pollutants and greenhouse gases.

The intern will join NESCAUM’s Clean Heat team and support initiatives to address air and climate pollution from buildings and industry. Most of the team’s work centers on advancing state policies that support conversion of fossil fuel-burning equipment, such as water heaters, furnaces, and boilers, to high-efficiency electric heat pumps. While specific tasks will be decided with the intern, sample projects may include:

  • Writing a technical and/or policy report on a specific issue related to heat pumps; this may include a literature review, data analysis, expert interviews, and other research methods.
  • Supporting development of a technical support document providing analysis and supporting information for a building decarbonization regulation.
  • Planning agendas, coordinating speakers, and creating presentations for public webinars and NESCAUM work group meetings.
  • Organizing meetings or convenings for NESCAUM state officials and/or other NESCAUM partners and stakeholders.
  • Attending a building decarbonization conference with NESCAUM staff.
  • Supporting projects on NESCAUM’s emerging Industrial Heat Electrification Initiative.
  • Improving the Clean Heat team’s operations by identifying and recommending opportunities for improved internal efficiency.

Our ideal candidate will have completed at least their sophomore year of college, and we will accept recent graduates who graduated within the last 12 months. Other desired qualifications include attention to detail and strong analytical, writing, communication, and research skills.

This is a great opportunity for a student interested in gaining experience in state-level climate and air policy (particularly building decarbonization). We are a small team, and the intern will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of our work. The internship will run from 10-12 weeks between May and August, depending on the intern’s schedule. The intern may work remotely or hybrid, with a preference for in-person work in NESCAUM’s Boston office near South Station. NESCAUM staff based in the Boston area work in the office three days per week (Monday-Wednesday).

Internship Location: Boston, MA or Remote; Please note that while the intern may work remotely, they must be located in one of the following states: MA, NH, NY, PA, RI, TX, VT.

Hourly Pay: $18/hour
